BWMK’s Elizabeth Kaveny Begins Leadership Role as President of Chicago Inn of Court

Elizabeth A. Kaveny, partner at Burke Wise Morrisey Kaveny, brought her first Chicago Inn of Court meeting to order as president of the esteemed legal organization on Sept. 23, 2014. The event took place at the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Chicago with Tinos Diamantatos serving as host of the meeting.

Since the founding of the first American Inn of Court in 1980, lawyers, judges, academics and students throughout the nation have participated in the organization's mission of promoting professionalism, civility, ethics and excellent legal skills at the American bench and bar.

More than 28,000 members participate on a regular basis in more than 350 chartered American Inns of Court.

Chief Judge Ruben Castillo of the Northern District of Illinois received the Judge Joel Flaum Award for his courageous leadership as a judge, prosecutor and lawyer and for his groundbreaking accomplishments for the area's Latino community. When he joined the law firm of Jenner & Block, Castillo was its lone minority attorney. He later became Chicago's first Latino federal judge and the first Latino chief judge of the Northern District of Illinois, the country's third largest federal court district.

In the same way that the selection of Elizabeth Kaveny as president-elect of the Chicago chapter of the American Inns of Court was announced at last September's annual meeting, its new president-elect was named at the September meeting. He is Lawrence Oliver II, the chief counsel of investigations for the Boeing Co.

The meeting stepped away from the agenda briefly when Paula Hudson Holderman, chief attorney development officer at Winston & Strawn LLP, informed the gathering that Ms. Kaveny is one of six recipients of the Women's Bar Association of Illinois 2014 Top Women Lawyers in Leadership Award. Other recipients include Maria Green of Illinois Tool Works Inc., Amy B. Manning of McGuireWoods LLP, Virginia Martinez of the Illinois Latino Family Commission, Jennifer M. Mikulina of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and Kay L. Schichtel of Swanson, Martin & Bell LLP.

The award will be presented at an inaugural reception on Oct. 23, 2014, at the Hotel Allegro, 171 W. Randolph Street, Chicago. For more information about that event, please visit the WBAI website page.

During Ms. Kaveny's career in trial law, she has obtained numerous verdicts and settlements of plaintiff personal injury, medical malpractice and professional malpractice actions each in excess of $1 million, and some surpassing $10 million. With partner Kevin G. Burke, she reached a $32 million malpractice settlement recently for a client who had both arms and legs amputated.

Among the peer-selected Illinois Leading Lawyers, Ms. Kaveny has been named among the state's Top 10 women litigators and Top 10 women personal injury lawyers. A founding name partner of her own firm after just 10 years of practice, she joined Burke Wise Morrissey Kaveny as a name partner in 2010.
